Free box fans are provided to senior citizens in an effort to provide heat relief and prevent heat-related illness during the hot summer months.
As part of a coalition with the City of San Antonio Department of Human Services, United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Catholic Charities is continuing Project Cool, a program that provides free 20-inch box fans to older adults in an effort to provide heat relief and prevent heat-related illness during the hot summer months in San Antonio. The goal of the program is to provide free fans as a low-cost, low-energy means to keep seniors cool without incurring high utility bills.

Free Fan Provides Comfort
One elderly couple stopped by St. Stephen’s CARE Center to receive a free fan after hearing about Project Cool on the news. They were immensely grateful because they had been sleeping in their car for a few nights where it was cooler than their house that lacked air conditioning. Project Cool has made it possible for this couple and so many others to find heat relief and sleep peacefully in their homes during the hot summer months.
